2016 HJ Sims Highlights
Published January 3, 2017
2016 was a strong year for the senior living industry. Values of existing communities strengthened, new construction of rental independent, assisted living and memory care facilities increased, and residential housing prices stabilized or rose in many markets. For the bond market, interest rates fell for the first 85% of the year. However, after the November election, interest rates rose, and many bond fund investors withdrew cash and put it into equities. As a result, interest rates rose from 25 – 75 basis points in the last 7 weeks of the year.
At HJ Sims, in 2016, our financing volume increased. Just as important, we continued to grow our Private Client Group investor base of individuals. We added eight income advisors in 2016. During periods of market turmoil, many individual investors continue to purchase senior living bonds – a reliable source of funds for our investment banking clients.
In 2016, Sims also expanded its reach into taxable municipal bonds with experienced traders and research analysts and additional income advisors. Already, taxable municipals have become an important part of the firm. Sims bankers will use their expertise to offer more financing options for their clients, including taxable municipals.
